Debt Management Alternatives

stop debt

Bankruptcy:

Bankruptcy is an alternative to getting out of debt. However, if you attempt to have debt discharged by bankruptcy, beware some forms of debt are not dischargeable under bankruptcy law, and/or you may have to liquidate assets to satisfy creditor claims and bankruptcy may stay on your credit report 7-10 years.

Making minimum payments:

Provided you do not accrue any further debt it may take you 30-40 years or more to pay off the debt. If you're 25 years old you may not have your debt paid off by the time you retire. If that isn't a scary thought.

Ignore debt:

When has a problem ever gone away by ignoring it?
Your creditors have a number of options available to them. If a creditor has a judgment they can seize assets. Now you have it - Now you don't!. Your creditors took it. Obviously this is not the ideal situation. Ignoring a problem won't make it go away.

Noel, Thomas & Edwards:

The professionals at Noel & Edwards can help you get rid of your debt whether it's a judgment, judgment lien, delinquent credits cards, etc. for less than what you owe, Guaranteed!!

Coffee:

Buying specialty coffee can get to be very expensive.

Smoking:

What do you spend per day, week, month?

Alcohol:

How much do you spend? Where?

Luxury items:

Snowmobile, ski jet, boat, jewelry, cell phone , fax machine, copies, etc.
Do you really need them or they are just nice to have?

Car

Do you need a new car or can a good used car do the job for you?

Movies:

How often do you go to the movies or rent a movies from a movie rental place?
Many libraries rent "current" movies very inexpensively.

Hotels:

When you use hotels, how much time do you really spend in a hotel... maybe a less expensive hotel down the street will work.

Trips - Gas:

Checkout gas stations with the cheapest prices. Maybe you've been going to the most expensive place in town.

Credit cards:

Before charging, do you really need it? Transfer high interest balances to lower interest cards, pay off high interest cards first, negotiate with credit card company to lower interest rate.

Clothes:

Do you need name brand clothes?
Would an off brand look just as nice?

Insurance:

See if you are paying for coverage you don't need or don't have coverage you do need.

Entertainment:

Vacations, Airlines, Car rental, Taxis:
Ask for discounts.

Eating out/fast foods:

How often do you eat out?
Can you wait until you get home to eat?
can you pack your meal (lunch)?

This is not intended to give you legal or financial advice; it is only to help you think about other options. Options you may not have before thought of.
